WMMP - North Woodstock, NH ~ Race Observations ~ |
|
Tonight I went to WMMP as a racing fan, not a photographer. I headed down around 4:30 and when I exited I93 I headed for my favorite food spot, Bill & Bobs Famous Roast Beef. I've known these folks for at least 15 years and their product is simply delightful. Stop in and ask for a Big Beef, or Super Beef, with sauce. Their roast beef is to-die-for and the sauce is perfect! Don't screw it up by putting cheese or anything else on it.
I arrived at the track around 5:45 and that was just right. I got settled into a nice grandstand seat, had a smoke, and at 6:03 a field of 20 late models rolled onto the track to run a make-up feature event. What a great way to start the night!
Tonight I figured I'd just take a bunch of notes and do a little race-recap without the overhead of the hundreds of pictures I usually have to sift through, edit, and post after writing a bunch on html code that usually takes me 4 to 6 hours to do on Sunday. So far, so good. Well, like every other thing we try to plan, it just didn't work out that way. My notes didn't tell the story.
My notes are full of car counts, start times, starting positions and finishing orders. That is some boring stuff (no offense Biggy). Tonight was about the winners and losers. Without a doubt, the race of the night was the 2nd late model feature. Matt Anderson and Brett Clairmont brought the fans to their feet with lap after lap of side-by-side racing at the front of the pack. Matt would be denied the triple crown on the final lap as Brett edged in front at the finish line.
Other winners included Brandon Bourne, Rubin Call, Stevie Parker and Tim Churchill. They all ran good races, but the feel-good story of the night was the 3rd place run that Dalton, NH's Allan Young had. The team has been struggling getting the car going after a bad wreck earlier in the season. Allan ran up front and proved to be a real handful for the leaders.
Every Saturday night produces a few winners, and where there are winners, there are losers. Tonight the losers were not the teams that had a poor night but the teams that loaded wrecked race cars. Dave Driscoll, Chandler Davis, Norm Andrews, Quinny Welch and Brock Davis all suffered after their cars were torn up. The biggest loss came at the hands of the backstretch wall when Russ Clark wrecked hard after getting turned sideways coming out of turn #2. This season Russ and the team have been making steady progress after being slowed down by several wrecked front ends that were the result of getting caught up in other people's messes. Russ was shaken up in the wreck, but is OK. The car is not!
" ... As far as our season, it may be over. The car will need a front clip for starters. I haven't taken it out of the trailer yet to assess all the damage. If we are not able to return this season thank you to those who helped and cheered for us and good luck to the late model teams in search of the championship." Russ Clark - Monday July 27th
